Differential cross sections for the elastic scattering of alpha particles by 20 Ne and 24 Mg have been measured at laboratory angle of 176° as a function of incident energy in the range 20 to 24.5 MeV. In alpha – 20 Ne scattering seven resonances have been observed. Angular distributions have been obtained at nine energies. Tentative spin and parity assignments have been made for five resonances, corresponding to the compound 24 Mg nucleus, by phase shift analysis. In the case of alpha – 24 Mg scattering, many peaks appeared in the excitation curve which shows rather complicated feature. Angular distributions have been measured at nine energies.
