Compact Hydrostatic Pressure Cell for Precise Resistivity Measurements up to 10 GPa Using PPMS

We report a compact pressure cell that is designed to measure the absolute value of electrical resistivity at hydrostatic pressures up to 10 GPa in magnetic fields at low temperatures using a commercial PPMS (physical property measurement system, Quantum Design). Hydrostatic pressures were generated using modified Bridgman anvils with a Teflon capsule. Its performance is demonstrated by measuring the applied-load and temperature dependences of the electrical resistivity of Bi, which confirms that this pressure cell can generate nearly hydrostatic pressures at least up to 10 GPa even with a compact size that can be accommodated within the PPMS.
